STOP SMOKING

People often ask how hypnotherapy can help them stop smoking for many reasons, including:

- They feel like a slave to cigarettes
- They want to set a better example for children or grandchildren
- They are worried about their long-term health
- They have a growing sense of social isolation
- They want to save the money they feel they are wasting on cigarettes

PLEASURE AND RELAXATION: THE TRAPS OF NICOTINE

Nicotine can trap you in two ways, pleasure and relaxation. People often tell me about the pleasure of smoking - the pleasure of relaxing from stress, with a coffee, a drink, with friends, after a meal. Smoking can be used to relax, but, in reality, nicotine is a ticking time bomb that causes physiological symptoms of anxiety. We then feel the anxiety that is created by the nicotine, and so we smoke. This creates an addiction, and because we no longer feel the symptoms of anxiety, we think it’s the cigarette that calms us – but it’s really the cigarette that makes us more and more anxious, in a vicious circle.

Have you felt trapped by nicotine, making several attempts to quit but ultimately reaching for the cigarettes? I can help. There are several approaches to quitting smoking sustainably, and we will use every chance of success.

HOW CBT HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP YOU TO STOP SMOKING

My approach to creating long-lasting change and helping you to stop smoking for good consists of three steps:

The big day: the main hypnosis session in the office or online (2-3 hours)

After treatment

One week of "smoking cessation preparation" at home

  • Listening to an MP3 of smoking-cessation hypnosis training at home every day including research on the effectiveness and usefulness of this work

  • Keeping records of your daily behaviour regarding tobacco which will ultimately be incorporated into what I say during your main hypnosis session

  • Understanding and modifying certain behaviours when you smoke to start breaking down your habits and making it easier to quit definitively

  • You leave with a series of small laminated cards, each with a useful thought, to keep with you and to read and reread, especially in case of smoking urges

  • You also have a folder with three documents: to remember what you learned in the session, to keep your motivation up, to maintain good habits lastingly

  • You are entitled to a support session at no extra charge within the next two weeks (the period of time required for physiological withdrawal)

  • I will send you an MP3 of a relaxing hypnosis session to replace the cigarette in moments of stress; you also get a post-session hypnosis MP3

  • The assessment of your relationship with cigarettes (how and why you started, supporting factors or obstacles in your environment, if you have already stopped and how and why you have started again)

  • Psycho-education (how does nicotine work in the body, what are the symptoms of withdrawal?)

  • Training in self-hypnosis, PLN techniques, visualization and relaxation to maintain your identity as a non-smoker, how to manage cravings, better control stress

  • Training in coping strategies in the three key situations where you are most likely to take up cigarettes again

  • The main session of hypnosis for stopping smoking, informed by all that I could learn about you and your relationship with tobacco

I was a smoker for all my life, but my health is not good, I am in a wheelchair and my physical therapist told me that there was a good hypnotherapist in the clinic that could help me stop smoking. Deborah told me to wait because I had just lost a good friend, but we did the session in one day in the fall and I really wanted to stop. I have not smoked since that day. - Jeannine
